Hampson’s bowled over by Bolesworth sale result

Non-stop bidding was the order of the day at Hampson’s Bolesworth Castle sale of classic, performance and supercars on Sunday 4 May. The result was more than 90% of the cars on offer finding new homes, generating a sale total of £1.6 million – Hampson’s biggest sale total to date – and post-sale negotiations on the small number of unsold lots are likely to take those figures yet higher.

If the saleroom was busy, online bidding was positively frenetic, as bidders from across the UK and overseas rushed to outbid each other on the 80+ lots going under the hammer. The highest price of the day was the £416,250 achieved for the quite exceptional 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Vantage. One of just 136 Aston Martin DB4 coupes made with the uprated Vantage specification, this has been the subject of a no-expense-spared restoration, which included a £40,000 engine rebuild by Aston Martin specialists RS Williams.

The unique 1966 E-type Jaguar Series One also sold well, just brushing up towards top estimate, at £283,696. This stunning sports car had undergone the most diligent and far-reaching restoration and upgrading during 2020 at the hands of long-established Jaguar specialist Woodham Mortimer, who took the opportunity to create their vision of E-type perfection in what they call the ‘4.7 Sport GT’

Other notable results included a ‘delivery mileage only’ 2016 Nissan R35 GT-R Recaro, which sold for £59,167 and a beautiful 2012 McLaren MP4 12C which has covered just 15,000 miles in 13 years. This achieved £52,875. The two Ferraris in the sale – a 1996 456 GT and a 2011 California – were rapidly snapped up for £39,667 and £36,562 respectively.

The sale included 24 cars from a single private collection, many of which were offered at no reserve. Among these were several fine Alvis models, including a 1964 TE21 Saloon, which sold for £18,844, a 1935 Crested Eagle Six, which achieved £18,562, and an absolutely splendid – and rare – 1947 TA14 Barnard Woodie, Shooting Brake (£9,000). The collection also included a delightful1934 Fordson Model BB Tanker with Pratts Motor Spirit livery. This wonderful piece of commercial vehicle nostalgia sold for £5,906.

Hampson’s Managing Director, Zach Hamilton, said: “This has been the most extraordinary sale! We presented an outstanding line-up of vehicles, and it only goes to show that quality sells. It’s a testament to our decision to focus on offering ever higher-quality lots, and I am delighted with the result. I would like to dedicate the sale to the late Gordon Bruce, who was such an integral part of the early years of Hampson Auctions, and who would, I know, have been thrilled to see how the company is evolving.”
